In November, residents of Ukraine will have the opportunity to witness one of the brightest meteor showers of the year – the Leonids meteor shower. This information comes from EarthSky, as reported by UNN.
Details
According to reports, the peak activity is expected from November 16 to 18, when the number of meteors will reach its highest point.
The Leonids meteor shower is formed from the remnants of the Tempel-Tuttle comet, with particles entering Earth's atmosphere and creating an unforgettable spectacle in the autumn sky. The name of the shower is associated with the constellation Leo, from which the meteors appear to "radiate."
The Leonids are known for their high speed, reaching up to 71 km/s, and typically, up to 15 meteors can be seen per hour. Once every 33 years, when the comet approaches Earth, the shower becomes extraordinarily intense, sometimes resulting in a "meteor storm."
The last such phenomenon was observed in 2001, and it remains one of the most impressive events in the world of astronomy.
