The Baltic states are preparing to assist Moldova following the suspension of gas supplies, according to a joint statement.

The decision made by Russian PJSC "Gazprom" to halt gas supplies to Moldova aims to undermine the political and economic stability of the country, as stated in a joint declaration by the Northern Baltic countries. This information is reported by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as conveyed by UNN.

The Northern Baltic countries (NB8, which include Denmark, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Estonia) announced on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, their intention to enhance support for Moldova following the suspension of Russian gas supplies.

The Northern Baltic Eight praised the actions of Moldovan authorities to ensure the stability of gas and electricity supplies under the current circumstances and expressed their intentions to increase international assistance to Moldova.

The document highlights that recent improvements in infrastructure and increased electricity transmission capacity have significantly enhanced Moldova's resilience to external energy pressure, reflecting the country's commitment to strengthening its energy security.

"We will work with the European Commission and other key partners to be prepared to intensify international support for Moldova," the document also states.

After the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine, Transnistria was left without supplies, while Moldova shifted to alternative energy sources. The right bank receives 52% of its electricity from Romania and 45% from local sources.
