The personal GMT-Master chronometer worn by NASA astronaut Edgar Mitchell during the Apollo 14 mission in 1971 was sold for $2,163,199 at an RR Auctions auction. The Boston auction house's space auction, which took place online starting September 26, received over 30 bids for these iconic watches.
Prior to the sale, the Rolex watch that had been to the Moon was appraised at $400,000, generating excitement in the weeks leading up to the auction. This sale highlights the strong demand not only for Rolex watches, particularly the GMT versions, but also for the allure of provenance and history when it comes to collectibles.
These exquisite timepieces can be seen in footage where Mitchell changes before the flight, as well as in onboard video taken inside the spacecraft. The watch features a 26-jewel Oyster Perpetual Movement and a striking black dial, along with a blue-red bezel that has been nicknamed "Pepsi." Engraved on the case back is: "Worn by Commander E. Mitchell on Apollo 14, 1971, Carlin - my daughter."
