This was reported by the National Bank of Ukraine.
The growth rate of cash in circulation last year remained moderate and was consistent with the levels of 2023, indicating that citizens and businesses have adapted to the realities of full-scale war.
Updated cash circulation statistics as of January 1, 2025
There are 2.6 billion banknotes in circulation totaling 814.3 billion hryvnias, as well as 14.8 billion coins (excluding commemorative and investment coins) worth 7.96 billion hryvnias.
At the beginning of this year, there were 63 banknotes and 186 payment change and circulating coins per resident of Ukraine (compared to January 1, 2024 — 66 and 177 units, respectively).
The most common banknotes in circulation are those with a denomination of 500 hryvnias, while the most prevalent coins are those worth 10 kopecks (27.3% and 27.8% of the total in circulation, respectively). The least common banknotes are those with a denomination of 50 hryvnias, and the least common coins are those worth 10 hryvnias (4.4% and 1.8% of the total in circulation, respectively).
The dynamics of the volume of coins in circulation indicate that the highest growth rates in 2024 were for coins with denominations of 5 and 10 hryvnias. Their numbers in circulation increased by 27% and 33%, respectively, compared to the beginning of 2024.
This trend is explained by the fact that the NBU is gradually withdrawing banknotes with denominations of 1, 2, 5, and 10 hryvnias from circulation, replacing them with corresponding coins that can remain in circulation significantly longer.
