Elon Musk has been in a prolonged conflict with OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, and has filed multiple lawsuits against the company and its leadership. He claims that OpenAI, which was initially established as a charitable organization, has violated its foundational principles by focusing on profit generation from the AI tools it has developed.
Although OpenAI is managed by a nonprofit organization, it oversees OpenAI LP—a commercial entity operating within a more complex corporate framework. Over the years, this company has reached a valuation of around $100 billion, with Altman becoming a key player in executing this strategy and driving OpenAI's growth.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Musk is considering significant investments in a competitor to OpenAI, which could grant him majority control in the artificial intelligence sector, where his own company X.AI is already active.
“If Sam Altman and the current board of directors of OpenAI, Inc. intend to become a fully commercial corporation, it is vital that the charitable organization receives fair compensation for what its leadership is taking from it: control over the most transformative technology of our time,” said Mark Toberoff, an attorney representing the investors.
