The material notes that in previous years, 16.2% of the EU population — or about 71.7 million people — were at risk of poverty.
The risk level is based on national poverty thresholds, while the map presents the indicator at the regional level using the nomenclature of territorial units for statistics.
At the regional level, in 10 EU areas, the proportion of the population at risk of poverty exceeded 30%.
The highest shares were found in the most remote region of France, Guyana, where more than half (53.0%) of the population was at risk of poverty, followed by Calabria (40.6%) and Sicily (38.0%) in Italy.
