The update aims to make banknotes more appealing and understandable. Currently, they feature nameless bridges and windows. Designers can choose from two alternative sets of motifs: European culture or a blend of rivers, birds, and European institutions.
In the first case, the faces of the six denominations of euro banknotes will showcase notable Europeans.
In ascending order of denomination: Greek opera singer Maria Callas, Beethoven, Polish-French scientist Marie Curie, Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, Italian artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci, and Austrian peace movement activist Bertha von Suttner.
